Nothing about this could be called a good idea.

The heist itself was simple enough. Prize money from an Alliance sponsored festival on Valentine -- easily replaced, to save the local government from embarrassment, so even the winners wouldn't realize what had happened. River and the new boy were supposed to wait in the crowd for a signal, then help split the goods between them and hide it away before leaving completely inconspicuously.

Except this festival was some old tradition, steeped in some half-remembered lore from Earth-that-Was about couples and hearts.

It starts simple enough. Crowds are still a lot to take in, and someone tries to pull River into some game of pairing up strangers when she latches onto Hiccups hand and gets a reply of, "Sorry, didn't know you was spoken for." Then they're shuffled through the sea of faces and pink streamers, River still holding his hand like a lifeline, getting comments about their couplehood.

Denying it at this point is only going to get them separated and off course, so.

Yeah, that's happening.

He'd tried.

He'd stammered something like, "Uhhh ah, actually, she is not, this is very much not -- " but no one had heard. Never mind that Mal and Simon apparently had good hearing enough to notice what was going on and shoot Hiccup terrifyingly menacing looks, which, thanks for the vote of support!

"This is -- you realize this is the opposite of going unnoticed," he mutters, "right?"

They aren't the only couple here, which is helpful. There's actually quite a few, and as much as they get comments it seems to be the same thing every other pair gets as they meander around. It's all a thick layer of syrup sweetness cloying in the air, thick enough to choke on.

"Plain sight," she mutters back, then looks over at where the captain and her brother are making angry eyes at her fake beau.

She sticks her tongue out at them, like any mature young woman, and steers Hiccup down a path of least bodily and compliment-filled resistance.
